Persephone is the daughter of Zeus, the king of all gods, and Demeter, the goddess of agriculture and harvest. Demeter was responsible for keeping the earth fertile, and this is where Persephone's power came from. One day, when Persephone was gathering flowers, Hades, the god of the Underworld, abducted her and took her to his realm. Demeter was devastated and searched everywhere for her daughter, but no one could tell her where Persephone was. Meanwhile, Persephone was in the Underworld, where Hades offered her pomegranate seeds. Unknowingly, Persephone ate a few seeds, which bound her to the Underworld forever.

Persephone's association with the Underworld is depicted with symbols such as the pomegranate, the cypress tree, and the poppy flower. The pomegranate symbolises the fruit she ate, and the number of seeds she ate - three or four - is believed to reflect the number of months she must stay in the Underworld each year.

Persephone was worshipped as part of the Eleusinian Mysteries, a secret religious festival in ancient Greece. The festival was believed to have been initiated by Demeter to celebrate the birth of agriculture, and Persephone was seen as the daughter of this harvest goddess. Participants of the festival would make a pilgrimage to Eleusis to sacrifice animals, offer libations, and partake in rituals. People travelled long distances to witness this important mystery.

The story of Persephone is an allegory of the cycle of the seasons. Her disappearance had the power to influence the fertility of the earth, and therefore, her return was celebrated.
