The Morrigan, also known as the Great Queen, Phantom Queen, or the Battle Crow, is a mysterious and enigmatic figure in Irish mythology. She is a goddess of fate, life, wisdom, prophecy, war, death, and sovereignty who could shape-shift. But who was she exactly? And what was her role in the ancient Celtic life?

In her animal form, the Morrigan is usually associated with the crow or the raven, and birds are believed to be messengers between the living and the dead. It was said that she could fly over the battlefield to choose the souls of the slain or protect the warriors. The Morrigan is also a shapeshifter who has assumed the form of a raven, heifer, wolf or eel. 

Despite her associations with war and death, the Morrigan was also revered as a goddess of sovereignty, particularly in her role as a prophetess or oracle. In tales such as the Táin Bó Cúailnge, she is said to have foretold the outcome of battles and advised the protagonists on how to gain or maintain their rightful position. This duality of roles, as destroyer and creator, is a recurring theme in Irish mythology and underscores the complexity and ambiguity of the Morrigan's identity.
